You press the unlock button and nothing happens. Before deciding the key needs replacing or reprogramming, note exactly what has stopped working. A remote button fault, a damaged case and a key that will not start the car are different problems, even when they happen in the same fob.
Multiservices at Robina Town Centre offers automotive remote batteries and car key services. A clear description of the fault helps us discuss the right starting point.
Separate the symptoms
Try your spare key, if you have one, and note the result. Does one key work normally while the other does not? Does the car still start with the troublesome key? Is only one button affected, or have all remote functions stopped?
Also note when the problem began. A drop, a wet key, a new battery or a visibly split case is useful information. Bring the faulty key and any loose case pieces with you. If the issue comes and goes, a short description of when it happens is more useful than simply saying the key is broken.
If neither key works, tell us that too. A problem affecting both keys is a reason to consider the vehicle as well as the remotes; it does not establish that both keys need replacing.
A battery change does not automatically mean reprogramming
Some manufacturer instructions explicitly say the remote retains its programming when the battery is replaced. For example, Ford's guidance for the key covered in this manual says changing its battery does not delete the vehicle programming.
That is a useful reason to avoid jumping straight to a reset, but it is not a rule for every car. Use the instructions for your exact model and key. Battery type, orientation and the way the case opens can differ. If a new battery has not helped, bring the key in rather than repeatedly trying unrelated online programming sequences.
A worn case may be a separate repair
If the car recognises the key but the housing is cracked or the buttons are damaged, ask about a case repair. On suitable keys, Multiservices can transfer the existing electronics into new housing. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the condition of the parts inside.
If you want a spare as well as a repair, mention both jobs. Browse our make and model key guides, then tell us the vehicle year and whether it has a turn-key ignition or push-button start.
Common questions
Will a battery fix a key that will not start the car?
Not necessarily. Starting and remote locking use different functions, and the cause needs checking. Describe what the car does and any message it displays.
Should I bring the car?
Call first. A battery or case enquiry and a job requiring vehicle programming can need different arrangements.
